Capitol Boat Club is Madison, Wisconsin’s first private boat club on Lake Mendota, providing the most affordable way to boat whenever you want, without the hassle of boat ownership. Starting in 2021, we also offer pontoon and speed boat rentals.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking experienced & energetic boaters to drive our Captained Charters. Charter Captains are classified as independent contractors working on an as-needed basis (anywhere from 0 - 30 hours per week during peak season). What does a Charter Captain do? Let’s dive in!
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Be the Captain for our members/rental customers who are looking to have some fun without the responsibility of driving. Captained Charters are common for bachelor/bachelorette parties, happy hour and dinner cruises, professional outings, family get-togethers, etc. Either way, you’ll be behind the wheel ready to take members/rental customers wherever they want to go or provide suggestions if they are not familiar with the lake.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Uncover/cover, clean, fuel, and move boats in preparation for charter
Perform equipment checks to make sure all necessary equipment is on board per reservation details
Manage the pre-departure and post-return process using a handheld tablet or smartphone
Provide excellent customer service to all customers during all interactions
Communicate safety information to passengers
Be (or become) knowledgeable about the lake, its landmarks, and points of interest to provide an enjoyable experience
Work with other Crew Members in a team environment to ensure excellent customer service and the completion of all required tasks
Ensure personal appearance is clean and professional
Follow all company policies and procedures
Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information
Perform other reasonable job duties as requested by management
Work outside in the elements and stand for an extended period of time
Complete the state-sponsored Boating Safety Course

ABOUT YOU
Availability (this is a big one):
We are open 7 days a week, from roughly 7:00 am - 9:00 pm, May through October, with the busiest months being June, July, and August. You should be available to work during the majority of these months.
Start dates for the positions are somewhat flexible, but we are aiming to onboard and train from late April through mid-June.
Holiday, weekend, and weekday afternoon/evening availability is a must-have as this is when most members and renters make reservations.
Schedules are based on reservations, and reservations are dictated by the weather, so you must be flexible and understanding about short-notice schedule changes.
At least 18 years of age
High school degree
Be able to pass a criminal background check
Valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle (highly preferred)
Comfortable operating or learning to operate boats (prior experience is highly preferred)
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to manage and complete multiple tasks during periods of high activity
Ability to read and manipulate handheld tablets/smartphones
Ability to bend, kneel, balance, and carry equipment up to 50 pounds
Have a positive, cooperative attitude with the capability of working unsupervised
*Members and renters are encouraged to tip Crew Members for their hard work and great customer service, but we can not guarantee that they will nor can we force them to do so.
